What is the difference between a vertical suction pump and a horizontal suction pump?

  1. Vertical suction pump has barrel structure below the ground which provide more positive NPSH as compare to Horizontal pump.
  2. In most of horizontal pump the angle between suction and discharge of pump is 90 degree but in case of vertical pump they are 180 degree.
  3. Vertical pump are multistage impeller and one impeller work as suction of other and hence have high pressure and head as compare to horizontal pump they have single stage or dual casing type structure only.
  4. Vertical pump are rarely cavitate as it consist barrel beneath pump always liquid present but in case of horizontal pump slightly change in pressure or you may say NPSh can lead to cavitation.
  5. A vertical suction pump has the motor sitting above the pump this leads difficulty to maintenance team as if any thing damaged in the pump then first you have to drop motor and then you can only start your work on pump but in case of horizontal pump if any problem occur in pump side then you can start your work without dropping motor of pump
